TEST PROCDEURE FOR DETERMINATION OF DLBD & VOIDS: COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATES

Relevant IS Code – IS: 2386 (Pt. – III) – 1963

Method for finding out D.L.B.D.

Bulk density or unit weight is the weight of the material in a given volume. It is usually expressed in kg per liter.

Take a mould of known volume and fill the same using a scoop or shovel with the aggregate without compacting or without dropping from a great height. It should be dropped from a height not exceeding 5 cm. It should be loosely packed. Fill the mould till the top surface is in one plane. Remove the excess material with a straight edge and weigh the aggregate in the mould.
\[{D.L.B.D.} = {{ Weight ~of~ loose ~aggregate ~in~ the~ mould} \over {Volume~ of~ mould} }\] \[{Percentage ~of ~voids} = {{ G_{s} – Y} \over {G_{s}} }\] \[Where,\] \[G_{s} = Specific gravity of aggregates \] \[ Y = DLBD~ in ~kg / ~liter. \]

Generally test cube molds are used for finding out the D.L.B.D. of fine aggregate and a farma of known volume is used for finding out D.L.B.D. of coarse aggregate. The following containers also may be used as per IS code.

Damp sand should not be taken for finding out D.L.B.D. but only dried sand should be taken for this purpose.
