CONSTRUCTION PROCESS AND IMPRTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF RESIDENTIAL SLAB WITH MIVAN SHUTTERING.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS AND IMPRTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF RESIDENTIAL SLAB WITH MIVAN SHUTTERING.

I hope everyone is doing great in their carriers, I have not posted anything from the past couple of months. I have currently changed my job and working as a site civil engineer in Mumbai in a residential project of one of the India’s best developers.

Construction work of any structure is a long process of successful day to day tasks, meeting the weekly goals and maintaining the discipline for long period of time by handling and coordinating with labors, skilled workers, materials and machinery.

I have come across the new system of shuttering work in this project i.e. Mivan shuttering work, though now its old but still it’s the best fast solutions for shuttering work till date. As I have already discussed with you on the topic of introduction of Mivan shuttering and basic knowledge about the same in my previous post. Today I am sharing you some of my personal observations and step by step process and points to keep in mind while handling the project with Mivan shuttering.

I have divided the process and points in to different sections, each sections is nothing but the activity related to construction work and included the points abut considering the care while performing that particular activity for smooth going and timely completion of project.

Every construction projects involves activity such as reinforcement cutting and bending work, reinforcement work of beams columns and other structures, cleaning work, shuttering making, shuttering fixing work etc…

Then comes the checking part in between all these activities, like checking of column reinforcement, shuttering work of columns, checking of slab shuttering work, beam size and depth checking (when using conventional shuttering), checking of shuttering levels, alignments, sizes of the structure, and then bottom alignment work (alignment and supporting work of walls) while using Mivan shuttering and finally casting of the slab with concreting work.

Let’s discuss each of these activities step by step.

Reinforcement of columns
A) Reinforcement of columns

Before Reinforcement work of columns

The very first activity which starts after the casting of slab is reinforcement work of columns.  Following points should be necessary and important while checking the reinforcement work of columns.

1 cleaning work of the slab area on which the reinforcement work of column is to be done. Make sure everything on the slab is clean and big size materials like ledger, verticals, machinery, concrete pipes etc. have been removed well in advance before starting of reinforcement work.

2  survey points marking - or grid line marking through survey - this is the most important activity after cleaning of slab as it includes marking of all the important points on the slabs depending upon the requirement like columns corner points, grid line points through which dimensions of sizes of rooms is measured and perfect right angle and line is measured on site.

2 make sure the cutting and bending of column steel has been prior to start the work or at least one day before the starting of work to avoid any shortage of reinforcement.

3 cutting and bending of steel – make sure that the cutting and bending of steel is done as per the given bar bending schedule for the column.

4 availability of tables, stools, binding wires, safety belts, hand glows and other safety and platform materials for reinforcement work.

5 outer area scaffolding work and platform (planks, jail) are done before starting of the work or one day before starting the work.

6 safety net fixing on the required ducts and cutouts and outer side of the building to avoid any mishap in the building at the time of work or while performing a particular activity.

7 supporting work of scaffolding system on below floor for keeping the scaffolding work stable and free from any dangers.

At the time of checking reinforcement of columns

1 checking of current and updated copy of drawing of both layout and schedule of columns, along with the general drawings.

2 checking of numbers of vertical bars, binders and hooks location and position. (Keeping in mind the proper tying of reinforcement with vertical and horizontal bars, vertical and hooks etc…

3 make sure the lapping of bars provided is as per the drawing and specification.

4 tying of lapping bars – each lap should by tied with binding wire at minimum 4 points with double Bandhi (2 no. of binding wires) with the proceeding bars of top floors.

5 make sure the lapping of bars have been done on lapping zone.

6 make sure the vertical bars have been staggered as per specification in the columns to maintain the proper lapping zone in position.

7 hooks and rings end should be bend to 135 degree angle for maintaining the proper grip with vertical bars and to withstand the column from earthquake forces.

8 rings should be placed in clockwise direction.

9 position of vertical bars and size of the columns as per the grid line drawing.

10 provision of extra bars in the condition of any steel cutting for openings (DB box, diverter, openings etc…)

11 provision of covers in three layers of the columns.

12 spacing of the rings should be as per the drawings.

After completion of reinforcement work of columns

1 cleaning of entire area and removing excess reinforcement, hooks, bends, cover books etc.

Mivan shuttering work

 B) Mivan shuttering work

Before starting of Mivan shuttering work

1 fixing of theisi (wooden pads) on the concrete floors as per the grid line drawing.

2 cleaning of any unwanted materials which creates problem in fixing of the wall panels.

3 cleaning work wall panels and applying of shuttering of to avoid sticking of concrete on the panel and for smooth opening of panels after the concreting work.

At the time of Mivan shuttering work

1 fixing work of entire inside wall panels and T-plates including SL (soffit length) (t-plate and SL are basically the parts of Mivan shuttering)

2 fixing work of entire outer side wall panels by fixing wall ties in each layer excluding the top layer.

3 wall ties of proper sizes should be used for 150 mm, 160 mm and 200 mm wall thickness respectively.

4 wall ties should be covered in plastic cover and proper Greece should be applied on it

3 fixing of pin and wedges on the panels to ensure proper holding of panels with each other.

4 fixing of deck panels and chajja panels.

5 cleaning of deck panels with the help of chisel’s removing the concrete from the slab deck panel surfaces.

6 supporting work of Mivan wall panels for alignment checking work of the walls and columns.

After shuttering work of slab and wall panels the slab is ready for beam and slab reinforcement work

C) Reinforcement work of beams and slab

The beam and slab reinforcement work should be done as per latest revised available drawings.

At the time of checking of reinforcement work

1 checking of numbers of bars in beams and the spacing of stirrups.

2 checking of development length/anchorage length of beams as per the grade of steel and concrete.

3 covering of beams and slab should be sufficiently provided cover blocks.

4 spacing and alignment of beam and slab reinforcement.

After completion of beams and slab reinforcement work

1 cleaning of all the unwanted materials like cover blocks, extra steel, hooks, bends and bars etc.

Reinforcement work of beams and slab

D) Shuttering work of outer area

1 each and every chajja sides and beam plates on outer side should be fixed properly as per drawings and specifications.

2 fixing of kicker on the outer side and top portion as per the drawings and location of kickers.

3 fixing of tie rod pipes and supporting solder pipes on the outer side of the top plates for proper fixing and holding the plates on the original poison.

4 fixing of top layer wall ties.

5 checking of all the grooves and sleeves positions as per the given drawings and specifications.

6 checking of levels of the slab with the help of auto level or other surveying instruments.

7 checking of top alignment along with dimensions with the help of shifting the bottom grid on the top surface of the slab.

8 fixing the grid line by using the nylon rope as per the points given in the drawing.

9 checking of dimensions of outer sides and skunks with the help of the grid line drawing.

So all these are the important points to remember in the casting process of slab in a residential project.
