SURFACE MOISTURE CONTENT: FINE AGGREGATE

Relevant IS Code – IS: 2386 (Pt. III) – 1963

Field Method:

1. Take a sample of about 3.5 kg and weigh it accurately. Let this be W1

2. Keep the same to dry in sun on a plate for about 2 to 3 hours or dry on a stove.
Remember it has to be only SSD (surface saturated dry). If it is done in oven it will become bone dry.

3. The dry sample is weighed accurately and let this be W2.

4. The difference between W1 & W2 i.e. W1 – W2 = W will be the weight of moisture.

5. $$\begin{aligned}{W1 \over W2}  X 100 \end{aligned}$$  will be the surface moisture content.

IS code Method:

Object: This method of test covers the procedure for determining, in the field, the amount of surface moisture in fine aggregates by displacement in water. The accuracy of the method depends upon accurate information on the specific gravity of the material in a saturated surface dry condition. The same procedure, with appropriate changes in the size of sample and dimensions of the container may be applied to coarse aggregates.

Determination by Weight – The container shall be filled up to predetermined mark with water and the weight in grams determined. The container shall be emptied. Enough water shall be placed in the container to cover the sample, after which the sample of fine aggregate shall be introduced into the container and the entrained air removed. The container shall then be filled to the original mark and the weight in grams determined. The amount of water displaced by the sample shall be calculated as follows:

Vs = Me + Ms – M

Where
Vs = weight in grams of water displaced by the sample,
Mc = weight in grams of container filled up to the mark with water,
Ms = weight in grams of the sample,

M = weight in grams of the sample and container filled to the mark with water
