IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER AT THE TIME OF PERFORMING ‘SIEVE ANALYSIS’ TEST AT SITE.
there is a huge difference between performing a test in laboratory and in real site condition , and for a civil engineers the site condition could be anything from advanced to normal but as a civil engineer we have to perform the test as accurate as possible and for that some of the points which are important for sieve analysis test at site are listed below:
1) Sample shall be brought to an air dry condition before
weighing and sieving. this may be achieved either by drying at room temperature
or by heating at temperature 100 OC to 110 OC in oven.
2) Sample is weighed accurately.
3) The air dry sample shall be sieved successively on
appropriate size starting with largest care shall be taken to ensure that
sieves are clean before use.
4) Each sieve is shaken separately for period not less than
two minutes.
5) Care should be taken that sieve net is not ruptured or
damage.
6) Care should be taken to clean the sieve, so that
particles do not block the sieve net.
7) Precaution should be taken that material should not be
overloaded & should not overflow while sieving.
8) Do not force any material through the sieve.
9) Record the weight retained on each sieve.
10) Fineness modulus is sum of cumulative % retained on each
sieve (up to 150 mic.) divided by 100.
11) Minimum weight required for sieving.
20 mm = 2.00 kg. , 10 mm = 0.50 kg. , 4.75 = 0.20 kg,
