QUALITY OF WATER TO BE USED AT CONSTRUCTION SITE

Quality of water to be used at site for the purpose of mixing the concrete, curing of structural members etc…

Construction site us full of activity and we are generally always busy in finding the bigger mistakes like structural faults, activity lag, check lists to follow and what not. But we forget to take care about the quality of water which has to be used in construction work.

“the water used for drinking is good for concreting but water used for concreting is not good for drinking”

As the above quote says it all if you carefully observe and understands its importance…..so lets discuss some of the points which are equally important to keep in mind at construction site.

Water to be used in the work shall be clean & free from injurious amounts of deleterious materials such as silica, acids, alkalis, salts & vegetable growth. Portable waters are generally considered satisfactory for use in the work.

If required by the consultant, the contractor shall have to get the water tested at his own expense for its suitability by an approved laboratory.

If water is found to contain any sugar or an excess of acid, alkali or salt, the consultant may refuse to permit its use.

As a guide, the following concentrations represent the maximum permissible values:

To neutralize 200 ml. sample, it should not require more than 2 ml. of 0.1 normal NaOH.

To neutralize 200 ml. sample, it should not require more than 10 ml. of 0.1 normal HCL.

Percentage of solids should not exceed the following:

Solids Percentage

Organic 0.02

Inorganic 0.30

Sulphates 0.05

Alkali Chloride 0.10

In case of doubt, the consultants may require that concrete/mortar mixed with water proposed to be used should not have a compressive strength lower than 90% of the strength of concrete/mortar mixed with distilled water.
