MEANING OF WELDING AND ADVANTAGES AND DIS-ADVANTAGES OF WELDING / WELDED CONNECTIONS.

MEANING OF WELDING –

Welding is one of the methods of connecting structural members with each other. In welding one or more structural members are connected with the help of weld.

WELD –

Weld is defined as a union between the two faces of metals at faces which are rendered or jointed or stick together with the help of plastic or liquid by using heat, pressure or by using both of them.

ADVANTAGES OF WELDING –

1. As no holes are required for welding, the structural members are more effective and efficient in taking the load and there are less chances of corrosion at joint.

2. The overall weight of the structure can be reduced significantly when we used welded connection for joining any structural members.

3. The welded joints are more economical compare to other techniques of joints, as the labour required are less as compare to other techniques.

4. Welded joints have better appearance then the bulky riveted joints.

5. The time required for welding is less as compare to riveted joints, therefore the speed of fabrication is high in welded connections.

6. The welding process requires less working space then the riveting process.

7. Any shape of joints can be made by using welded connection, also when it comes to noise…there is a silence in the process of welding then the riveting connections.

8. Welded joints have more efficiency then riveted joints or connections and therefore welding is more acceptable process then riveting process.

DIS-ADVANTAGES –

1. Skilled workers and electricity are required for doing welding, and hence it becomes costly process then the riveting process in which almost minimum to zero electricity is required.

2. Members or structural members are likely to distort in the process of welding. Because internal stresses and warping are produced due to uneven heating and cooling of the metal or that particular structural member.

3. The welded connections are more brittle in nature and hence their fatigue strength is very less as compare to riveted connections.

4. Defects like internal air pockets, slag inclusion, and incomplete penetration are some of the defects which are very difficult to detect in welded connection and are more expensive for repair then the riveted connection.
